At Valorsul, what you no longer value and have therefore thrown away becomes a resource again, a raw material that can be transformed into a new cardboard box, a new glass bottle, electricity, fertiliser for agriculture or materials for building a new road.
Landfill disposal

A landfill is a space for the final disposal of solid waste generated by human activity.

The base of the landfill is covered by an environmental protection system consisting of an artificial waterproofing barrier and a leachate drainage system (liquid from the biodegradation of the mass of waste), in order to prevent these liquids from seeping into the ground and sending them for appropriate treatment. The slopes of the landfill are also covered with an artificial waterproofing barrier. A landfill also has a drainage system for biogas (gases from the biodegradation of waste), which is sent for energy recovery or burning.

A landfill must also have an environmental monitoring system, which includes monitoring leachate, biogas, groundwater, surface water and topographical changes.

When it reaches the limit of its capacity, the landfill is subject to a rigorous process of closure and appropriate landscaping, which can then become a green space or leisure park for the public to enjoy, in good safety and environmental conditions.
