At Valorsul, what you no longer value and have therefore thrown away becomes a resource again, a raw material that can be transformed into a new cardboard box, a new glass bottle, electricity, fertiliser for agriculture or materials for building a new road.

The digitisation project at the Lumiar Sorting Centre has won first prize in the Digital Transformation in Sustainability category.

Valorsul was honoured at the National Sustainability Awards, organised by Jornal de Negócios, with the 1st Prize in the Digital Transformation in Sustainability category for its digitisation project at the Lumiar Sorting Centre in Lisbon.

This project represents an important step in the modernisation of packaging sorting, by integrating cutting-edge technology that provides a more detailed understanding of the materials discarded by the public and arriving at the centre, improves the separation of packaging and enhances the quality of materials sent for recycling.

Unlike sampling-based models, these technologies, which are based on artificial intelligence, enable real-time monitoring of what is recyclable and what is not of sufficient quality for recycling, providing a level of insight and control that did not previously exist.

In addition, the Carbon Capture project at Valorsul’s Energy Recovery Plant in São João da Talha was awarded an honourable mention in the Decarbonisation category. This project aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the incinerator, enabling the testing, in a real-world context, of a new CO₂ capture technology and the assessment of its efficiency and economic viability.

The awards now received reflect the implementation of technology-based projects and the development of solutions applied to urban waste management, in line with the objectives of efficiency, circularity and emissions reduction.

Valorsul is part of the EGF Group and is responsible for the treatment and recovery of urban waste within its area of operation, focusing on innovation as the central pillar of its activity through the management of infrastructure and systems associated with collection and treatment, with a focus on material and energy recovery.
