At Valorsul, what you no longer value and have therefore thrown away becomes a resource again, a raw material that can be transformed into a new cardboard box, a new glass bottle, electricity, fertiliser for agriculture or materials for building a new road.
Requalification of Casal Ventoso

Valorsul and Lisbon City Council have completed the requalification and reforestation of the Casal Ventoso hillside, an ambitious project that was announced as part of the ‘Plant a Tree’ initiative, developed by the European Commission - Representation in Portugal.
The Casal Ventoso hillside covers an area of 3.4 hectares, where more than 600 trees and around 16,500 shrubs have been planted. In addition, the redevelopment work removed rubble and the remains of existing buildings, which gave way to leisure and walking spaces, with lighting and street furniture (benches and bins).
As well as making the Casal Ventoso hillside a more appealing and valued space, the reforestation work brings important social and environmental benefits. Reforestation aims to recreate the Mediterranean forest and develop suitable habitats, especially for birdlife.

The work also ensures connections and easy accessibility between the PER Ceuta Norte development, the Casal Ventoso Social Centre and the urban centre of the Santo Condestável parish. All the slopes are now stabilised and served by staircases and ramps, with fences and palisades in the necessary places.
The main objectives of the intervention were thus fulfilled, which included preserving the topography, ensuring pedestrian paths, and preserving the natural heritage (geological and landscape), safeguarding plant and shrub species. It should be noted that the trees and shrubs planted will reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) levels, sequestering an estimated 287.35 tonnes of CO2 over two decades.
A total of 660,446 euros were invested in this intervention, which was in line with the project's budget.
